هذا الكتاب "رحلة ابن خلدون"، هو عبارة عن مذكرات شخصية كان يدونها يوماً فيوماً وأطلق عليها اسم "التعريفات بابن خلدون" وفيها ترجمته ونسبه وتاريخ أسلافه، وشرح في هذه المذكرات ما عاناه في حياته ورحلاته في المشرق والمغرب، وتتضمن هذه المذكرات مراسلات وقصائد نظمها، وتنتهي حوادث هذه المذكرات سنة 807هـ أي قبل وفاته بعام واحد.
وقد ظل هذا الكتاب طوال قرون ملحقاً بكتاب "العبر" ولم يظهر بشكل مستقل حتى سنة 1951م، وذلك بجهود العالم المغربي محمد بن تاويت الطنجي المتوفي سنة 1963م، والذي قضى عدة سنوات في تحقيقه ومقابلة مخطوطاته العديدة مع المصادر والمظان المعاصرة له والسابقة عليه، بما في ذلك تعليق هوامشه.
