اعتاد المحققون النظر إلى هذا الكتاب على أنه جزء من كتاب "العبر وديوان المبتدأ والخبر..." وظل هكذا إلى أن قيض الله من يعني به ويعمد إلى تحقيقه والتعليق على هوامشه. فقد انصبت جهود العلامة المغربي محمد بن تاويت الطبخي على العناية بالكتاب وتوجيه النظر إلى جانب مهم من أدب الرحلات.
يضم الكتاب يوميات ابن خلدون ورسائله التي كتبها أثناء تنقله وسفره المتواصل في أمصار المغرب والأندلس والمشرق العربي. ولم يتوقف عن ابن خلدون عن تنقيحه والإضافة إليه إلا في أيامه الأخيرة. كما ذكر فيه أيضاً أخبار توليه المناصب وعزله عنها والأدوار السياسية التي لعبها. وقد واجهت المحقق جملة مصاعب منشؤها اختلاف النسخ وتعددها إضافة إلى التطور الذي طرأ على فكر ابن خلدون واتساع أفاق ثقافته.
ورحلات ابن خلدون تنقسم إلى قسمين: الأول يضم رحلاته في بلاد المغرب. والثاني: رحلته المشرقية. وقد الزم المحقق نفسه بمنهج صارم في تحقيق الكتاب والتعليق على هوامشه وبيان غامضة فبحث في صلة الكتاب المخطوطة بالمؤلف ثم قام بفهرسة المخطوطات بين القاهرة واستنبول للعثور على مخطوطتين للرحلة كانتا نسخة المؤلف. وقد عارض المحقق نص ابن خلدون بأصوله المباشرة. وعمد إلى ضبط أسماء الأمكنة وذكر الاسم العربي للمكان إلى جانب اسمه بالحروف اللاتينية كما يرد في المصورات الجغرافية.
