سعى "مُعجَم أَفْعَلَ في اللُّغة العربيّة" إلى تقصّي التّحولات الدلاليّة التي تَنجم عن دخول الهمزة على الأفعال الثّلاثيّة المجرَّدة، في محاوَلة ينبغي لها أن تشكّل، بمكتشفاتها الواسعة المذهلة، سبقاً علمياً في ميدانها. وقد عالج ذلك في خمسة مجالات، مُدعَّمة بشواهد مُعجميّة غزيرة، هي:
-توسيع الحقل الدلاليّللفعل الثلاثيّ المجرّد بإضافة معنًى جديد. وهنا كان الحصاد المدهش. لقد استطعنا أن نثبت لهذه الصيغة ضمن الأفق، مئة ة أربعة معان، من بينها واحد وعشرون معنًى ذكرها قبلاً سيبويه وابنُ عصفور والحمْلاويُّ. وهذا العدد الهائل من المعاني الجديدة، يسمح لنا بالحديث عن مُعجَم معان، جديد للمترادفات التي جَرَدْناها بخصوص كُلّ معنًى في سياقات مختلفة.
-توسيع الهمزة الحقلَ الدلاليّ للفعل الثلاثيّ المُجرّد لازماً كان أو متعدّياً ليبلغَ الظرف أو الجارّ والمجرور.
-تقليص الحقل الدلاليّ للفعل المتعدّي الذي تدخل عليه هذه الهمزة العجيبة فتحيله إلى لازم. وبذلك ينتقض معناها الأكثر شيوعاً.
-تقليص الحقل الدلاليّ للفعل المتعدّي ليتحوّل إلى لازم.
-تَضْييق هذه الهمزة الغريبة الأطوار، على الفعل في بعض الأحيان، إلى درجة لا تضيف معها أيّ معنًى جديد إلى ذاك الذي كان يحمله الفعل المُجرّد في أصله قبل دخولها عليه، سواءٌ أكان لازماً، أم متعدّياً، أم لازماً حيناً ومتعدّياً حيناً آخر.
