يقول المؤلف في مقدمة كتابه: "أما بعد... فإن علم الروحانية مضطر إليه غاية الإضطرار، وقد صُنّفَ فيه كتب عديدة وقديمة وجديدة، وكل مصنّف أبدى ما عنده بحسب ما أدى إليه إجتهاده، فمنهم من بسط ومنهم من اختصر، فرأيت البسط فيه من الكلام يوجب تكرار المسائل، والإختصار يوجب ترك الضوابط، فاستخرت الله تعالى على وضع هذه النبذة بين الإيجاز والبسط، ليقف الناظر فيها على غرضه عند اضطراره إلى هذا العلم، ولا يحتاج في طول دهره إلى غيرهما في سائر أعماله، ولا لأركانه إلى سلطان ولا أمير، ولا كاتب ولا وزير، لما حوته من الأعمال والأقسام، وترتيب الجان، وتسخير الأملاك، وطرد الحيوان المؤذي، وجلب الطيور ووحوش البر المأكولة، وحجب الجان وإستجلابهم، ودوام موادتهم للإحسان بالمحبة والمودة، ثم أذكر أشياء يحتاج إليها الطالب في علم الروحانية غالباً أو واحداً من أصدقائه، فيجد إلى ما يحتاج إليه سبيلاً، وسميتها: "إغاثة اللهفان في تسخير الأملاك والجان"، مقتفياً في تأليفها آثار من تقدم من العارفين والحكماء من لدن سليمان بن داود على نبينا وعليهما أفضل الصلاة والسلام، ومن تأخر إلى وقتنا هذا، متتبعاً يصحح ما قالوه، لأنهم مدار الأعمال وقطبها، وبها تتم الأعمال؛ إذ لا عمل بغير قسَمٌ لا يتم... فإذا وقع الطالب على قَسَمٍ صحيح مشهور بالصحة، كان ذلك القَسَمْ سلاحاً يتمكن به من رقاب أعدائه من الجنّ والإنس...
من أجل ذلك عمد المؤلف، وكما يذكر – إلى وضع هذه النبذة المفيدة، وجعلها في معنى إغاثة للملهوف الطالب لهذا العلم، وجعل أولها وصية، وآخرها وصية أيضاً، وما بين الوصيتين علم أصول الروحانية، وأقسام جليلة، وأبواب صحيحة اتخذها من الكتب المعتمدة في هذا المجال، والمشايخ العارفين، ليجد كل ناظر فيها ما هو مراده، مُبَيَّناً غير محتاج إلى شرح وتأويل...
وذلك كله مما شمل الآتي: 1-الروحانية لكلّ كوكب منسوب إليه الفلك، 2-شروط القَسَمْ (الدروع والأذكار المانعة للجنّ وغيرهم، صفة الإستنزال للأملاك... الطالب لعلم الروحانية القَسَمْ الذي يتكلم به سليمان بن داود عليه السلام، قَسَم قهر الأعوان... القَسَمْ المختص بالأرواح...)، 3-دعوة للإستنزال والإستحضار، وإخراج الدفين، 4-آداب علم الروحانية، 5-عزيمة البرهتية، 6-تصريف إحاطة وحجاب عظيم، 7-حرز الإحتجاب وله شرط طويل وفضائل لا تحصى، 8-فضائل سورة يس، 9-رياضة فاتحة الكتاب، 10-فائدة عظيمة.
