تلك بعض من أبرز السمات الوصفية التي أطلقت على المتنبي، غير أن المتنبي، لم يكن الشاعر المنفرد الموهبة وحسب، كان الشاعر العالي التطلعات الشاعر المدقق في الصنعة الحريص على التجويد الدائب بالإعتماد على معرفته العميقة بالشعر وبالعربية التي عد من كبار العارفين بها.
لقد اعتمدت في بناء هذه المختارات على النسخة الصادرة عن هيئة أبو ظبي للسياحة والثقافة، غير أنني أخضعتها لترتيب زمني اعتمده أبي الطيب المتنبي نفسه في تدوين شعره، بدءاً بالعراقيات الأولى، فالشاميات، فالسيغيات، ثم المصريات، فالعميديات، فالشيرازيات أو العضديات آخراً.
ثم جعلت المرثيات المختارة واسطة العقد، كما خضعت المقصورة بحيز مستقل لمكانتها المتفردة في عمله الشعري.
