يعد كتاب "التنبيه على مبادئ التوجيه" من أجلّ كتب أبي الطاهر إبراهيم بن عبد الصمد بن بشير وأشهرها عند علماء المذهب المالكي وأكثرها تداولاً بينهم، حتى قيل: قال ابن بشير فإنه ينصرف غالباً إلى قوله في "التنبيه".
ولذلك، فالكتاب من أهم مصنفات فقه المالكية وأجودها، ويؤكد هذا ما احتوى عليه الكتاب من مواضيع فقهية مرتبطة بأدلتها مع بيان علتها وأصولها، بأسلوب سلس واضح لا غموض فيه للعبارات والمفردات ولا إلتباس.
كما تتجلى أهمية هذا الكتاب في كونه يتضمن المسائل الخلافية في المذهب المالكي وجمعه لأقواله، سواء منها الضعيفة أو الراجحة أو الشاذة أو المشهورة، وربطه المسائل الفقهية بأدلتها وبيانه طريقة إستثمار الأحكام منها، وقد سلك فيه مؤلفه مسلك الإختصار المبني على قواعد الأصول، وضمنّه ما تحتويه الدواوين المبسوطة من العلم، بعد أن نقّح ولخص فصولها وحذف حشوها، مع الإيجاز في الشرح.
ولأهمية هذا الأثر، دأب على تحقيقه ودراسته الدكتور محمد بلحسان ابتدأُه بالحديث عن عصر ابن بشير والحالة السياسية في بغداد، ومصر، والمغرب، والأندلس، وإفريقيا موطن ابن بشير، كما تحدّث عن حياة ابن بشير الشخصية وعطائه العلمي والإنتقادات التي وجهت له، ثم تابع التحقيق في الكتاب "التنبيه" فأبان منهجه ونسبته للمؤلف، وأسلوبه، ولغته، وطريقة تنظيمه، ومنهج تناوله للمسائل الفقهية.
كما تحدّث عن النقد عند ابن بشير من خلال تعقبه للخمي وغيره من العلماء، وأشار إلى منهجه في الترجيح، وموقفة من المشهور والشاذ، وتناول أيضاً موضوع (الإجتهاد) عند ابن بشير وطريقة توظيفه للقواعد الفقهية والأصولية، وأبرز القيمة العلمية للكتاب.
