من حقِّ الأستاذ على تلميذه كتابةُ ترجمةٍ له، لأن بذكر الترجمة تحيى معلومات نفيسة دقيقة، وبتركها تضيع معلومات كثيرة؛ ومن هنا جاء إهتمام مؤلف هذا الكتاب الدكتور صفوان داوودي لوضع (معجم الشيوخ) ذكر فيه أولاً ترجمة شيوخه في العلم منذ أن كان طالباً للعلم الشرعي في مسجد زيد بن ثابت بمدينة دمشق، حيث تعلم الفقه ومبادئ النحو والتاريخ الإسلامي، وكان هذا دافعاً للتوسع في طلب العلم على العلماء الكبار خارج المسجد فلزم - كما يقول - "درس الشيخ نايف العباس في التاريخ، والحديث الشريف، وغيره"، ثم انطلق بعده إلى دروس الفقيه الكبير محمود الحبال، والشيخ عبد الرحمن النعسان في الغوطة، ثم توجه "إلى عربين لجمع القراءات العشر على الشيخ أبي منير محمد السيد إسماعيل، وحضر "دروس الشيخ العلامة محمود الرنكوسي وآخرون".
وأكمل الطريق في طلب العلم فترجم لأعلام العلماء من القرن الرابع عشر، والثلث الأول من علماء القرن الخامس عشر الهجري، وأوردهم في الكتاب مرتبين على الأحرف من الألف إلى الياء، ومنهم إبراهيم اليعقوبي وأحمد الحبشي وأحمد الرقيمي وأحمد علي السورتي وأحمد الفلاش، وأخرون...
واتبع في ترجمة الشيوخ الإسم والنسب ثم تاريخ الولادة، والشيوخ، والمؤلفات والتحقيقات ويختتم بتاريخ الوفاة.
