أدرك الإنسان منذ القدم ضرورة إظهار الشكل بأبعاده الثلاثة في رسومه, تظل آلاف السنين وهو يرسم الزخارف البدائية في مناطق سكناها محاولاً إظهار أحجامها وأشكالها وقد استهدفت الخط والدائرة والمنحني والمثلث والمربع وكل الأشكال الشبكية مع تكرار الوحدة بتناغم وتكرار مما يدل على ارتقاء فكره وجنوحه الى الجمال في طرائق حياته. وبعد نهضة مضطربة جنوب أوربا تم التأكيد من قبل (فنسي) على أن الظل والنور هو القاعدة في إظهار البعد الثالث في الأشياء. ويأتي (رمبراندت) ليحدد التدرج الضوئي ويعلن: إن الضوء يخترق اللوحة الى الأماكن الأكثر ظلمة. ويصبح (جورج دولاتور) ساحر النور وشاعر الظل. وحين الإنطباعية, قلبت المفاهيم, وجددت النظريات السابقة, وحملت شعار اللون هو الضوء, إنه يلعب مع الإنعكاسات, ويجعل الظلال شفافة, ويزيل الظلمة من لوحة الرسام. ثم يتحدث الكتاب عن الحالة الفيزيائية للإضاءة والحالة النفسية للضوء ونوعية الضوء, والرسم بالحبر وأنواع الأحبار, وريش التحبير, طريقة الرسم بالريشة, أساليب الرسم بالحبر, ثم يستعرض مجموعة من الزخارف والرسوم المتنوعة التي تساعد على إظهار البعد الثالث وتعد تطبيقاً لما سبق.
