دير الزور قلب الفرات النابض، لقد نشرت في أرجاء وادي الفرات وجزيرته الحضارة والوعي والحس الوطني والروح القومية والإدراك السياسي.
ولوجودها يعود عمران وإعادة تأهيل الرقة والميادين والسبخة والبصيرة، وأحداث مدن جديدة، كمعدان جديد ومدينة البوكمال ومدينة الحسكة والقامشلي.
والدير في أقل أثر مكتشف تعود إلى القرن التاسع الميلادي، لكنها لم تكن حاضرة "عاصمة" لوادي الفرات، وأصبحت حاضرة للفرات منذ العهد العثماني الأول عام 1516- 1517م، وفي النصف الثاني من القرن التاسع عشر شكل العثمانيون بها متصرفية الزور أصبحت عاصمة لوادي الفرات وجزيرته بلا منازع.
ومن خلال ما أورده الباحث في كتابه أن الدير مدينة حية وموجودة، وذات قدم، والبحث يدور حول دليل أثري قاطع للشك، يثبت إلى أي عصر (محدد) أو لأي زمن ينتسب الدير القديم.
