هذا الكتاب يقدم على وجازته معلومات وافية عن المعجم العربي, منذ أول خطوة خطاها العلماء لجمع اللغة من مظانها الصحيحة في البوادي المنقطعة من جزيرة العرب, إلى أن تجسدت جهودهم في أول معجم عرفته العربية وهو معجم (العين) العبقري القرن الهجري الثاني الخليل ابن أحمد, حتى آخر معجم صدر في عصرنا. وذلك بتقديمها حسب مناهجها, منظومة في مدارس تضم ما يدور في فلكها من هذه المعاجم, والتعريف بأصحابها, وطريقة البحث فيها, ثم في بيان محاسن كل منها ومآخذه, من خلال نماذج دالة مختارة من هذه المعاجم. كل هذا بعبارة وجيزة معبرة, تؤدي فيها كل كلمة وظيفتها بدقة ووضوح. فكانت الحصيلة نحواً من ثلاثين معجماً, موزعة على ثلاثة عشر قرناً, تبدأ بمعجم العين, وتنتهي بما هو موصول بما تصدره مجامع اللغة العربية في عصرنا. فهو كتاب لا غنى عنه لكل مشتغل بالعربية أو منتسب إليها.
