يعد كتاب الشيخ أبي العباس "أحمد بن علي النجاشي" والمعروف بـ (فهرست أسماء مصنفي الشيعة) من أكبر وأهم وأتم الفهارس التي أحصت مصادر الثقافة الشيعية منذ نشأتها حتى القرن الخامس الهجري الذي أدركه المؤلف ومات في منتصفه. ولأهميته اعتبره العلماء والرجاليون والفقهاء فصل الخطاب بين جميع كتب الرجال. أما الهدف الرئيس في كتابه ماذكره في مقدمته رداً على من زعم أنه لا علماء في أهل هذه الثقافة ولا مصنفات لهم فجمع ما استطاع من عناوين هذه المصنفات منسوبة إلى اصحابها، فترجم لهم، وروى عنهم. وهذه التراجم ليست تاريخية، وإنما هي تراجم روائية يقتصر أغلبها على رسم القنوات إلى اصحابها أو ذكر ما يتعلق بأحوالهم الروائية كإحصاء مصنفاتهم أو تعداد من روى عنهم أو رووا عنه أو مبلغهم من الوثاقة والضعف إلى غير ذلك من الوصف الروائي. وهو ما ذكره بقوله: " ... فإني وقفت على ما ذكره السيد الشريف ... من تعيير قوم من مخالفينا: أن لا سلف لكم ولا مصنف وهذا قول من لا علم له بالناس ولا وقف على أخبارهم ولا عرف منازلهم وتاريخ أخبار أهل العلم ... وقد جمعت من ذلك ما استطعته ولم ابلغ غايته لعدم أكثر الكتب وإنما ذكرت ذلك عذراً إلى من وقع إليه كتاب ولم أذكره. وقد جعلت للأسماء أبواباً على الحروف ليهون على المتلمس لاسم مخصوص فيها ...". وبهذا توزعت مواد الكتاب بحسب الترتيب الأبجدي لحروف اللغة العربية وتبدأ باب الألف بـ(آدم بن إسحاق) وانتهاءً بـ باب الياء (يعقوب بن شيبة). وبين البداية والنهاية ذكر المؤلف جميع أسماء العلماء ومصادرهم في الحديث وتراجمهم ومصنفاتهم ...
