يشكل عنوان كتاب الدكتور لويس صليبا الجديد "السُنّة والشيعة مذهبان أم ديانتان؟" سؤالاً للإنطلاق في مختلف الخلافات بين الفريقين لطبيعة الإنقسام المذهبي في التاريخ الإسلامي، ومدى انعكاس هذا الإنقسام، الذي مضى عليه أربعة عشر قرناً، على حاضر الأمة الإسلامية. يطرح المؤلف مختلف وجهات النظر والآراء والنظريات الفقهية والعقدية (الكلامية) والتاريخية، وأولها الخلاف الذي حدث بعد وفاة النبي محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم ويعتبره "كان سياسياً حول شروط الخلافة ومواصفات الخليفة" وعلى هذا فالخلاف هو حول النظام السياسي أكثر منه خلافاً حول الفقه والأصول، وهنا يحضر السؤال الذي يبني عليه المؤلف كتابه ويناقشه في ثلاث نقاط رئيسية: الأولى: الشيعة والسّنة دينان مختلفان .. هذا الرأي يتبناه بعض التيارات السلفية من السنة والشيعة معاً. الثالثة: السنة والشيعة إسلامان مختلفان. يتبنى هذا الرأي مجموعة من المفكرين الإسلاميين الجدد في كلا الفريقين وكلٌ يورد حججه وبراهينه في هذا الباب ...
إلى ذلك يتطرق المؤلف إلى أحاديث المتعة، ويقدم قراءة نقدية لأحاديث أهل السّنة ورواياتهم في تحريم المتعة، كما ينقد أحاديث الشيعة ورواياتهم وأبعادها ومشاكلها الإجتماعية ووضع المرأة في المتعة "إنها مستأجرة، وهذا تعبير من صلب كتب الفقه الإمامي، وهي بمنزلة الإماء" ... إلى غير ذلك من موضوعات ذات صلة منها "التنقية سمة الإمامية الأساسية" والخلاف حول ما يسمى حديثاً أو سنة نبوية عند السّنة، بينما الشيعة لا فرق عندهم "بين قول الرسول وقول ألإمام المعصوم، فكلاهما حديث". ولعل ما ورد في مقدمة هذا الكتاب للأستاذ عماد الهلالي يعكس الكثير من واقعنا العربي والإسلامي وهو: "هل لدى الشيعة أو السنة مشروع حقيقي مدروس لنظم الأمة في قطار التقدم الذي فاتها، أم يكتفون فقط بشعارات فضفاضة، وخطابات قُدّت من العاطفة، تلهب مشاعر وأحاسيس العامة من الناس دون أن يكون لها صدى ملموس على أرض الواقع؟ ...". سؤال برسم الإجابة ...
