غالباً ما يُقدّم الانقسام بين السنّة والشيعة على أنّه صراع حول هويّة خليفة النبي محمد. لكن، في واقع الامر، لم يتجسد هذا الشرح إلّا بعد مضي قرن [على وفاة محمد]، وقد تجسد في مدينة الكوفة الواقعة في جنوب العراق (النجف حاليّاُ). يتعقب هذا الكتاب الفحص عن نشأة وتطور الهوية الشيعيّة. وستُظهر هذه الدراسة من خلال تحليل نقدي للنصوص الفقهية التي لم يتم تحقيق مصادرها إلّا في الآونة الأخيرة، كيف أنّ الشيعة الأوائل قد نحتوا هويّتهم الاجتماعيّة والدينية المستقلّة من خلال طقوس وممارسات معيّنة، وضمن حدود فضاءات مقدّسة منعزلة. على هذا النحو، يتناول هذا الكتاب مسألتين خلافيتين أصليتين تعلّقا بالإسلام الأول، ألا وهما: مسألة تاريخ بروز الهويّة الشيعيّة، والأساليب التي اتبعها الشيعة للإثبات اختلافهم عن الثقافة السائدة في المجتمع الكوفي. هذا كتاب مهم إذ يمثّل سبقاً يفتح مجالاً جديداً للدراسة، الأمر الذي يجعله يشكّل تطوّراً لافتاً في دراسة العالم الإسلامي في أولى مراحله.
