هذا الكتاب هو عبارة عن مجموعة من المجالس الحسينية التي اختارها الإمام محمد الحسين آل كاشف الغطاء، من بين عشرات الكتب التي دونت فاجعة الطف قديماً وحديثاً. وحيث أن هذا المقتل الذي جمعه الشيخ من كتب التأريخ والسير اعتمد أصدق الروايات وأصحها فيما كتب عن مقتله حيث إن المدونات التي سجلت المقاتل الحسينية، كانت تتلى على الناس في المحافل والمناسبات العزائية، وكان الكثير من العلماء والفضلاء الذين يقيمون شعيرة مقتل الحسين في شهر محرم الحرام يفضلون الوجيز والمؤثر في تصوير الحادثة ويقرؤونها على السامعين، ومن بينهم كان الإمام قد دون مقتلاً اختاره ليقرأه بنفسه على الحشد الغفير من الناس ممن يحضر دار جده الكبير في أيام شهر محرم الحرام، وقد طبع المجلس الثالث منه من قبل بعنوان (مقتل الحسين) وهو مقتل صغير معد لقراءته في يوم عاشوراء وضم إليه مجلسين في هذه الطبعة من الكتاب فجاء تحت عنوان (المجالس الحسينية).
