لقد أتى على النص الرحلي حين، استوى فيه جنساً أدبيّاً محكم البناء، وذلك بما تهيّأ له من تراكم مجموعة من النصوص الرحلية الشامخة، رسخت جملة من الضوابط والمعايير الأجناسية التي صنعت للنوع الرحلي فرادته وتميزه.
وإسهام العرب المسلمين في هذا الجنس الأدبي أكبر من أن نحيط به، ومدونات الرحلة في الأدب العربي، بدأت منذ القرن الثالث الهجري، بداية تنحو منحى جغرافيّاً وشهدت الكتابة في هذا الفن إزدهاراً كبيراً.
وإن كتابنا هذا هو عبارة عن نص من نصوص هذا الجنس الأدبي، أخذ من مقومات جنس الرحلة بأوفر نصيب، وهو رحلة العلامة شهاب الدين محمود بن عبد الله الألوسي (المتوفى سنة 1270هـ) إلى الأستانة، المسماة "نشوة الشمول في السفر إلى إسلامبول" التي قام بها في القرن الثالث عشر الهجري، وسجل خلالها ملاحظاته، والمواقف التي تعرض لها، ولقاءاته التي جرت له.
