أدى توقع وجود النفط في مناطق عمان الداخلية، إلى عودة الصراع بين الإمامة والسلطان بعد معايشة سلمية دامت أكثر من أربعة وثلاثين عاماً تقريباً، بعد توقيع معاهدة السيب 20 سبتمبر 1920م، وتدخلت أطراف اخرى في هذا الصراع متوخية عن طريق هذا الصراع حصول ما تصبوه إليه وخاصة البريطانيين الذين ألقوا بثقلهم بشكل غير عادي في أحداث حرب الجبل الأخضر؛ إذ أنهم في الفترة السابقة للصراع كانوا يكتفون فقط بمساعدة السلطان حتى لا يفقد سلطته دون التدخل المباشر، ولكن مع بوادر ظهور الذهب الأسود اختلفت السياسة البريطانية.
قد شهد هذا الجبل تحصن ثورة الإمام غالب بن علي الهنائي (1954- 2009م)، في وجه السلطان سعيد بن تيمور آل سعيد (1932- 1972م) والحكومة البريطانية، والتي أطلق عليها في التاريخ العثماني الحديث والمعاصر (حرب الجبل الأخضر 1975- 1959م)، والتي استمرت حوالي ثمانية عشر شهراً، وانتهت بسقوط الجبل الأخضر في قبضة السلطان، وتوحد عمان تحت سلطته السياسية، وفرار أقطاب الثورة وزعمائها - الإمام غالب بن علي الهنائي، والشيخ سليمان بن حمير النبهاني، والشيخ طالب بن علي الهنائي - إلى المملكة العربية السعودية، وقاموا هناك بتشكيل حكومة منفى، أطلقوا عليها اسم: (إمامة عمان).
أن الصراع بين الإمامة والسلطنة تمخض في النهاية عن إنهيار نظام الإمامة الإباضية، وهروب قادة النظام إلى خارج الوطن، وتثبيت سيطرة السلطان على المناطق الداخلية معتمداً في ذلك على المساعدة البريطانية.
