نفت الكتب فى تراجم حفاظ الحديث ورواته، بل ترجم العلماء للضعفاء والوضاعين والمدلسين، بل ذهبوا إلى أبعد من ذلك، فصنفوا فى البخلاء، والاذكياء، والحمقى، والعميان، والعور، وكان القضاة من هؤلاء الذين غنى بهم فريق من المصنفين عناية خاصة، إذ كانوا هم أساس تحقيق العدل بين الناس، والقضاء وسيلة هذه الغاية، وقد أفاد ابن حجر من المؤلفات التى سبقته عندما ارخ لقضاة مصر فى كتابه رفع الإصر كما سنبينه فيما بعد، وعلى الرغم من أن كتاب رفع الإصر لم يستوعب سائر قضاة مصر منذ الفتح الإسلامى حتى عصر المؤلف، وذلك المؤلف بترجمة من أوردهم ابن دانيال فى رجزه فقط، على الرغم من ذلك فقد امتاز كتابه عن بقية الكتب التسبقته بأنه يعد أشمل كتاب ألف فى هذا الفن، فقد نقل عن الكتب السابقة وأضاف إليها ما وقع له من أخبار شيوخه ومعاصريه، كما أنه نقل عنكتب أصبحت مفقودة، وأخرى مازالت فى دور الكتب مخطوطة، وهو بهذا يستأهل أن يكون مرجع الباحثين وعمدة الدارسين، وقد احتوى كتابه هذا كما ذكر فى مقدمته على تراجم قضاة مصر ممن تضمنهم رجز ابن دانيال، وكان قد جعلهم طبقات على السنين منذ فتحت مصر إلى آخر المائة الثامنة، ثم رتبه على الحروف تلميذه عز الدين الحنبلى المتوفى سنة 876 هـ.
وقيمة الكتاب واضحة، فموضوعه من الموضوعات الهامة فى تاريخ مصر الإسلامية، يضاف إلى ذلك أنه المؤلف الوحيد الذى نجده بين أيدينا عن قضاه مصر عبر العصور الاسلامية.
