إن من أهم المسائل التي يهتم بها أهل العلم، هي مسائل أصول الدين، وما يشتغل به من العقائد، وكذلك النظر في مسائل أهل الفرق الإسلامية، التي اشتغل فيها العلماء منذ القرون الأولى واهتموا بالتصنيف فيها، وعُرِفت هذه المصنفات بإسم "المقالات" من أهل الفرق الإسلامية، أو غير الإسلامية.
وكتابنا هذا الذي بين أيدينا هو من أهم هذه المصنفات المتقدمة التي تركها لنا العلماء، وهي تنقل لنا آراء أهل الفرق ومعتقداتهم، وأسماء الفرق ورؤسائهم وأهم حججهم.
وإن كان كتاب مقالات الإسلاميين وإختلاف المصلّين للأشعري قد ذاع صيته، إلاّ ان كتاب المقالات للبلخي، هو الأسبق منها، وإن كان الأشعري يعرض مقالات أهل الفرق، وهو يمثل أهل السنّة، فإن الكعبي يعرض في كتابه مقالات أهل الفرق، وهو معتزلي ورأسٌ في هذا المذهب الفكري المشهور.
