فحق الأمومة هو القرابة من جهة الأم، كما أن حق الأبوة هو القرابة من جهة الأب، فيما يتعلق بحق الأمومة يعتمد حصراً خطب النسب الأنثوي، وفيما يتعلق بحق الأبوة يعتمد حصراً خطب النسب الذكري، والقرابة من جهة الأم هي الأكثر أصالة.
ومن الممكن الزعم أنها إحدى المراحل التي مرت بها الحياة الأسرية في كل مكان خلال تطورها، ويحدثنا العديد من الشعوب من اجزاء مختلفة من العالم أنها لم تزل حتى الآن تمارس حق الأُمومة أو أنها كانت تمارسه في السابق، بينما يجد المرء في نظام القرابة الآخر القائم اليوم، في كثير من الأحيان، عادات ومؤسسات لا تنسجم مع هذا النظام، بل تتطابق تماماً مع نظام حق الأمومة، وهي تعود بالتأكيد إلى زمن كان فيه هذا الحق هو الصيغة السائدة في الحياة الأسرية.
إنني أنوي في هذا الكتاب معالجة المسألة المُشار إليها في علاقتها بالشعوب السامية وبصورة خاصة بالعرب القدامى.
