فقد استقر عند كثير من الباحثين اللغويين المعاصرين أن النحاة تأثروا بمنهج الأصوليين (فقهاء ومتكلمين)، وأن من مظاهر ذلك التأثر ظاهرة التعليل التي استكثر منها النحاة حتى استشرت في كتاباتهم واستأثرت بجل أبحاثهم. وأكثر هؤلاء الباحثين اللغويين هم من الوصفيين الذين ينكرون أن يتعدى عمل اللساني وصف اللغة، بدعوى أن وصف اللغة في بناها الإفرادية والتركيبية هو العمل العلمي الإيجابي، وأن ما زاد على ذلك من تعليل لهذه البنى هو من التخرص والظن، لا يعدو أن يكون – في أحسن الأحوال –فلسفة تأملية لا وجود لها ملموس في واقع اللغة. وهم بهذا الموقف الذي اتخذوه من التعليل- على أنه ليس من صميم البحث اللغوي – قد استساغوا القول بتأثر النحاة بالأصوليين، واستدلوا زيادة على ذلك بما وجدوه في كتابات ابن جني وابن الأنباري والسيوطي على الخصوص من محاولة وضع أصول للنحو على غرار أصول الفقه.
