يجمع المؤلف التركماني هذا الكتاب ترجمة للإمام إمام المسلمين "أحمد بن حنبل" استقاها من كتاب تاريخ الإسلام "للإمام الذهبي" وفيه يتحدث عن أخبار هذا الرجل الذي عاش لله وأوذي في سبيله، فلم ينكص ولم يتزعزع، بل ثبت على الحق ثبوت الجبال الرواسي، فحفظ على الأمة دينها من البدع والناس له تبع. تواضع ثم تواضع حتى سما على الملوك وثبت واستمسك حتى هزم الجبارين المستكبرين.
ومن المواضيع التي ساقها المؤلف ضمن فصول كتابه نذكر: نسبه، أوليته وطلبه للحديث، إقباله على العلم واشتغاله وحفظه، تواضعه، سيرته، زوجاته، وأولاده، محنته من الواثق، حاله أيام المتوكل، وصيته، مرضه ووفاته. كما ويردُ المؤلف فيه على الرواية التي تزعم أنه اسلم يوم وفاته.
