هذه ذكريات وليست مذكرات، فالمذكرات تكون متسلسلة مرتبة، تمدها وثائق معدة أو أوراق مكتوبة وذاكرة غضة قوية. وأنا رجل قد أدركه الكبر فكلت الذاكرة وتسرب إلى مكامنها النسيان. والنسيان آفة الإنسان، وإن كان نعمة من الله. ولولا أن المرء ينسى آلام الحياة ما استطاع السكون إليها ولا الرضا بها.
وليس لدي أوراق مكتوبة أدون فيها الحادثة حين خدوثها وأصف أثرها في نفسي، وهذا تفريط كامل مني لم يعد إلى تداركه من سبيل، لذلك أوصي كل قارئ لهذه الفصول أن يتخذ له دفتراً يدون فيه كل عشية ما رأى في يومه، لا أن يكتب ماذا طبخ وماذا أكل ولا كم ربح وكم أنفق، فما أريد قائمة مطعم ولا حساب مصرف، بل أريد أني سجل ما خطر على باله من أفكار وما اعتلج في نفسه من عواطف، وأثر ما رأى أو سمع في نفسه، لا ليطبعها وينشرها (فما كل الناس من أهل الأدب والكتابة والنشر) ولكن ليجد فيها -يوماً- نفسه التي فقدها.
لا تعجبوا من هذا الكلام فنحن في تبدل مستمر، كل يوم يموت في شخص ويولد شخص جديد، والميت أنا والمولود أنا. خلايا جسدي تتجدد كلها كل بضع سنوات حتى لا يبقى منها شيء مما كان. عواطف نفسي تتبدل، فأحب اليوم ما كنت أكره بالأمس وأكره ما كنت أحب. أحكام عقلي تتغير، فأصوب ما كنت أراه خطأ وأخطئ ما كنت أجده صواباً.
