"جمهرة اللغة" معجم من المعاجم العربية الهامة، وقد جاء ضمن أربعة أجزاء كان لابن دريد ترتيبه المغاير لما جاءت عليه معاجم اللغة العربية الأخرى. حيث ابتدأ فيه بذكر الحروف المعجمة التي هي أصل تفرع منها جميع كلام العرب، وعليها مدار تأليفه، وإليها مآل أبنيته، وبها معرفة متقاربه من متبائنه.
ثم اختار بعد ذلك منهجاً مخصوصاً في تصنيفه هذا حيث شرع بمادة واحدة وكتب كل المواد التي تحصل من تلك الأحرب بتقليبها مرة أو مراراً مثاله أنه أورد مادة (ب ض ر) فكتب لفظ: بضر، ضرب، برض، ربض في تلك المادة ولكنه رتبه على حروف الهجاء مثلاً إذا أراد شخص لفظ (برد) فيجده في مادة (بدر) لأن الدال قبل الراء، وعلى هذا القياس جاءت طريقة ابن دريد في تصنيف معجمه اللغوي هذا (جمهرة اللغة).
