في هذا الكتاب مجموعة شعرية تكاد تكون إلاَّ القليل منها ضمن ترجمة الشاعر الموجودة في كتاب الأغاني، ففي تلك الترجمة نجد ما يقارب مائتين وتسعة وأربعين بيتاً، من أصل أبيات هذا الكتاب البالغ عددها مائتين واثنين وستين بيتاً، أي بفارق ثلاثة عشر بيتاً، أتى بها جامع هذا الديوان من غير مصدرٍ، إلى جانب بضعة أبياتٍ شكَّ بصحة نسبتها إلى الشاعر، فوضعها في مستدرك (ملحق) في آخر الكتاب، ولم يجعلها في متنه.
ويقوم عمل المحقق في هذا الكتاب وفقاً للخطوات الآتية: تصدير الكتاب بمقدمة تشتمل على دراسة موجزة لحياة الشاعر وأخباره وشعره، شرح القصائد والمقطوعات والأبيات شرحاً مفصلاً يتناول المفردات والتعابير، مع الحرص على ضبط الألفاظ، وتعيين البحور الشعرية، التأكد من سلامة الأبيات الشعرية من الناحيتين الإملائية والعروضية، توثيق القصائد والمقطوعات والأبيات، وردِّها إلى مصادرها من كتب التراجم والأدب ما أمكن، تزويد الكتاب بفهرس عام، يساعد القارئ، ويمكنه من الرجوع إلى مواد الديوان بسهولةٍ ويسر.
