في القرون الوسطى في أوروبا، تعبير الفقر/الفقير Pauper كان يقابله تعبيرPotens أي القوي لا تعبير Rich أي الغني…”. والفقير في لسان العرب هو: “المكسور الفقار ويضرب مثلاً لكل ضعيف…”. هذا الجذر اللغوي المشترك بين الفقر وبين فقرات العمود الفقري لا يزال صداه موجوداً في التعبير الشعبي حيث يوصف الشخص الضعيف/الفقير بأن “ظهره مكسور” أو بأنه “بلا ظهر” أي بلا سند. يسير الكتاب وفق منهج نقدي وسجالي ويراجع عددًا كبيرًا من الدراسات ابتداء بنقد النتائج وصو إلى لنقد مناهج القياس والمقاربات النظرية، مع تخصيص فصلين مستقلين في القسم الأول من الكتاب للجوانب النظرية لتعريف التنمية وتعريف الفقر. وفي الجانب التطبيقي يتضمن الكتاب مراجعة نقدية مباشرة ل 35 تقريرًا ودراسة عن الفقر )من التسعينيات إلى عام 2019 )، ومن ضمنها التقارير الصادرة من الدول العربية. هذا الكتاب له فائدة مباشرة بالنسبة إلى طلاب العلوم الاقتصادية والاجتماعية والتنمية وأساتذتهم، وكذلك بالنسبة الى الممارسين ممن يعملون في هذا المجال في المنظمات الدولية أو منظمات المجتمع المدني، أو في المؤسسات الحكومية وصانعي السياسات، الذين يجدون فيه أمثلة مباشرة لتقارير عن بلدانهم، إضافة إلى التحليل النظري غير التقليدي للفقر.
