يعد ذا الرمة من أواخر شعراء العصر الأموي وممن ساروا على نهج القدماء في المعاني والموضوعات، ولكنه حافظ في الوقت ذاته على فصاحته وسلامة لغته، إذ إنه لم يخرج عن بداوته، ولم يتحول إلى الحوافر، كغيره، إلا قليلاً، من هنا تأتي أهمية هذا الشاعر، ولما نلمحه في شعره من بعد عن الإفحاش والتزام للعفة. لذلك رأى "أن يعيد النظر" في ديوانه شرحاً وتعليقاً.
حيث قام بشرح الديوان معتمداً على نسختين: إحداهما هي نسخة الأمبروزيانا برواية يوسف بن يعقوب النجيرمي المتوفى سنة 423هـ/1032م، وهي بشرح التبريزي، أما النسخة الثانية فهي التي نشرها المستشرق البريطاني مكارتني في كمبردج سنة 1919م، فقابل بين النسختين وأثبت النقص، بعد إصلاح ما وقعت عليه من أخطاء.
يعد ذو الرمة من أواخر شعراء العصر الأموي، وممن ساروا على نهج القدماء في المعاني والموضوعات، وفي نفس الوقت كان محافظا على فصاحته وسلامة لفته، وجاء شعره بعيدا عن الإفحاش في الكلام ملتزما بعفة الألفاظ . وهذا ديوان يحتوي على مجمل شعره . في أغراض عديدة كالغزل والمدح والهجاء والوصف والرثاء وغيرها من الأغراض الشعرية وعلى هذه الطبعة شرح للألفاظ للأستاذ أحمد بسج.
