مصنف هذا الديوان هو غيلان بن عقبة بن نهيس بن مسعود العدوي، أبو الحارث، ذو الرمة: من شعراء العصر الأموي، ومن فحول الطبقة الثانية في عصره. قال أبو عمرو بن العلاء: "فتح الشعر بامرئ القيس وختم بذي الرمة". كان قصيراً، دميماً، أكثر شعره في الغزل والتشبيب، وله قصائد طويلة بلغت أكثر من مئة بيت.
وشعره متفاوت في الجودة، وعموماً لا يحسن مطالع القصائد، ولا مخاطبة الممدوحين.
وإن من أراد أن يعرف شعره، فليتأمل قصائده وأشعاره من حيث لغتها ومعانيها وصورها وأخيلتها والتشابيه فيها، وقد خدم شعر ذي الرمة فشرح وتناوله بالدرس كثير من الشراح، وصدرت له طبعات كثيرة.
وميزة الطبعة التي بين يدينا من هذا الديوان أنها جاءت مضبوطة النص بالكامل، كما اهتم معد الطبعة "عبد الرحمن المصطاوي" بترتيب القصائد حسب روي القافية على حروف المعجم، هذا إلى جانب اهتمامه بذكر البحر الذي نظمت عليه القصيدة، كما سعى لشرح الكلمات اللغوية، معتمداً على المعجمات اللغوية القاموس المحيط، المعجم الوسيط، واللسان والشروح السابقة لهذا الديوان مختصراً ما طال منها تهذيباً وإظهاراً لمحاسن الشعر.
