اجتمع لشوقي ما لم يجتمع لغيره من الشعراء، فقد حباه الله بموهبة فريدة، ساعده على تهذيبها وصقلها ما حظي به من رعاية واهتمام وقد عرف شوقي بأنه شاعر يتميز بحضور البديهة وسرعة الحاضر.. كما أنه جمع إلى القدرة على الخلق ودفق العطاء خصب الإنتاج وغزارته وتعدد ألوانه، وتنوع ضروبه وفي شعره يجد المرء حفاظاً على روائع القديم والتطلع بشغف إلى محاولات الجدة والتوليد، كما أنه آلف بين التقليد والابتداع وقد تعددت أغراض شعره، فأكثر في نظم المدائح وأطنب، كما كان مقلاً في الهجاء، إذ اعتبر تجنب الهجاء من باب التأدب لكنه لم يعرض عنه كلياً، أما في الرثاء فقد انفرد شوقي بنزوع قوي إلهي ووفرة عدة المراثي والمرثيين. كما أنه جمع في مرثياته أساليب الرثاء الثلاثة: الندب والتأبين، والعزاء.
وفي الغزل له مقطوعات كثيرة، كما في الوصف. ولشوقي آثار نثرية وشعرية كثيرة ويضم هذان المجلدان آثاره الشعرية أو الشوقيات وهي تقع في أربعة أجزاء توالي ظهورها بين سنة 1925 وسنة 1934 وفي الجزء الأول قصائد تدخل في أبواب التاريخ والاجتماع والسياسة، من أبرزها القصيدة الهمزية، ونهج البردة أما الجزء الثاني فتدور قصائده حول الوصف، و الغزل وقد أرخ فيه شوقي لكثير من الأحداث والمناسبات بأسلوب وصفي. الجزء الثالث وهو يقتصر على باب المراثي، ويضم ما نظمه شوقي في تأبين زعماء مصر ورجالاتها الذين عاصرهم، كما يتضمن هذا الجزء إحياء ذكرى، الخالدين من أعلام التاريخ بمآثرهم الإنسانية وعبقريتهم أما الجزء الرابع، فأبرز ما فيه أمثال شوقي وحكاياته على السنة الطير والحيوان.
