مسكتُ لجام الأيَّام وقلت: لا أريد هذا الجماح الَّذي أنتِ فيه؛ فبالأمس كنتُ ذلك الطِّفل الحالم بالسَّعادة. ركبتُ رغم أنفي مهرة السَّنوات، ولو خيَّروني لاخترتُ سلحفاة؛ لكي أرى الأيَّام بتمعُّنٍ، لا أمرُّ بجانبها كأنَّها صورًا معلَّقة... يا صاحب الخيل هلَّا أرحتني، إمَّا أن تضعني تحت الحوافر، أو توقفها قليلاً؛ فسرعة خيلك أعمتَّ بصري, وصوت الرِّيح ضلَّل بصيرتي. فمي وعيناي تعبا من هول ما أرى، أمسك اللِّجام وأسحب رأس الأيَّام، فلا تلتفت ولا يثنيها أحد، حتَّى مزَّقتْ يديَّ. من المراهن على هذا السِّباق؟ قل له قد كسبه، فها أنا أدفعُ سنين عمري، والدَّائرة لا تنتهي. أنزلني، فإنِّي أخشى أن أرمي بنفسي من على ظهر خيلك، فترى أمِّي ما حلَّ بي. فقد تعبتُ وتعلَّمتُ وقفزتُ من الحواجز الكثيرة، وآن الأوان أن ينتهي هذا السِّباق.
