الياس عون، أحدُ أمثلة العصاميّة الشخصية، في الاحتراف المهنيّ. بنى نفسه بشجاعة وأناة، احتلّ مكانتَهُ النقابيّة بجدارة. لم يستظلّ طائفة ولا استقوى بحزب، على كونه معتزاً بانتمائه، فخوراً بصداقات كثيرة وعلاقات عامة، نسجها عبْر مسيرة متميزة بالانفتاح الواثق…
إنّ «ثلاث سنوات نقيباً…» صورة واضحة، متكاملة، عن نشاطه النقابيّ ومشاركته المتوازية في الواجب الوطني، رأياً ومبادرة، مساعي واتصالات. ذاك أنّ لنقابة محرّري الصحافة اللبنانية، كما لنقابة الصحافة اللبنانية، والحركة النقابية الحرّة عموماً، دوراً أساسياً في الحفاظِ على مؤسسة الحرية، المرتبطة جذرياً وبنيوياً بالكيان اللبناني. فالإعلام ثروة حضارية إنسانية، وميزة مرتبطة بوجود المجتمع والدولة، تتحتّم رعايته وإحاطته بالضمانات الأخلاقية والقانونية.
تُظهر سيرةُ النقيب الياس عون، حجم مواظبته على عمله الصحافي، خمسة عقود، منذ بداياته، تدرّجاً ومشاركةً ناشطة، في مؤسسات إعلامية عريقة، حيث تولّى مهمّات عديدة فضلاً عن حضوره المستمرّ في نقابتي الصحافة والمحرّرين، مما أكسبَه الخِبرة الواسعة وأهّله لثقة زملائه، فاختاروه نقيباً، خلَفاً للنقيب التاريخي ملحم كرم، ثمّ أعادوا انتخابه مع فريق عمل تمثيلي جامع.
