هذا الكتاب أحد الكتب الجامعة الكبار، التي تهيأ لأغراضها من إقتدار المصنفين فيها، ما جعلها في بابها أصولاً وأمهات.
عمد فيه ابن الأنباري - وهو من ضخامة الحفظ بحيث عَلِمْتَ - إلى ما وقع في كلام الناس (في صلواتهم، ودعائهم، وتسبيحهم، وتقرُّبهم إلى ربهم)، ثم إلى ما وقع في (محاوراتهم ومخاطباتهم) من أمثال العرب وكلامها، (وهم غير عالمين بمعنى ما يتكلمون به من ذلك)، ولا بتأويله، وإختلاف العلماء فيه = فعمد إلى ما كان من هذا الجنس فتتبعه، وقيد منه نحواً من ألف نص (845)، استشهد عليها من آي الكتاب العزيز، ومن حديث المصطفى صلى الله عليه وعلى آله، ثم من كلام الصحابة رضوان الله تعالى عليهم، وكلام سائر العرب؛ ونثر من غريب اللغة ومن شواهد الشعر؛ وذكر من إختلاف العلماء في مذاهب التفسير، وفي وجوه العربية، ما كان معه غاية من الغايات.
