طرح المؤلف في هذا الكتاب موضوع الحب من زاوية توافق سيرته واتجاهه وعقيدته، فجاء الكتاب ذا سمات فذّة جعلته من أمهات الكتب في هذا الموضوع حيث استقى من معينه من جاء بعده. لقد تناول الخرائطي موضوعه في كتابه من وجهة نظر إسلامية، وحاول أن يعلم الناس، وبخاصة أولئك الذين يحبون، أن من أحب فعفّ فكتم فهو شهيد، فأتت أخباره، والشعر الذي أورده في الحب والهوى تدور في النطاق لا تتعداه.
ونثر الخرائطي في ثنايا الكتاب كثيراً من آيات القرآن الكريم، وأحاديث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، وفسّر وأورد آراء فقهية تؤيد فكرته وتدعم آراءه وتنمو بالكتاب النحو الذي أراده له. كما اعترض الخرائطي على ما لا يوافق الإسلام كالزنى، وغلبة الشهوة، وأكد على ضرورة التمسك بالعفاف، مختاراً لدعم أفكاره ما يوافقها من القرآن والحديث وسيرة الصحابة والتابعين وقصص المحبين وأشعارهم.
فجاء الكتاب متسماً بسمات ظاهرة جلية تبين أخلاق مؤلفه وسيرته ودينه القوي المتين، فهو كتاب في الحديث النبوي بما أورد فيه المؤلف من أحاديث مسنده، وكتاب أدب بما اشتمل من أخبار وشعر ونصوص، وكتاب زهد وتصوف بما جاء فيه من أخبار المتصوفة وقصصهم، وكتاب فقه يبين موقف الإسلام من العشق فيدعو بدعوة الإسلام، ويفرق بين الحلال والحرام، ويطالب بالابتعاد عما حرّم الله، ويأبى الاقتراب من الشبهات واضعاً نصب عينيه أنه من حام حول الحمى يوشك أن يقع فيه.
وفي الكتاب أخبار طريفة عن المحبين انتقاها مؤلفه بدقة ولم ينس أن يعظ برفق ولين، ويحثّ على فهم روح الدين. هذه السمات جعلت الكتاب محطّ أنظار من بعده ممن كتب وألف في هذا الموضوع وتناول هذا المضمون.
