كتاب "البيان" شرح لكتاب "المهذب" للإمام الشيرازي في فقه الإمام الشافعي. وشارحه الإمام العمراني، وهو كتاب من كتب الموسوعات الفقهية في مذهب الإمام الشافعي والمذاهب الأخرى، يعنى بالمسائل، ويزبر أدلتها، وينشر مذاهب السلف، ويشير إلى مآخذها، وينص على الراجح، ويكشف عن مستنداته.
فهو من الأسفار العظام، التي تصنف تحت مظلة الفقه المقارن. ومن المصادر الثرية التي حوت نقولاً عزيزة، وتفريعات عديدة، وتعليلات تنم عن أصالة فقهية، وتشبع بالنصوص الشرعية، وإحاطة بالمذاهب الإسلامية.. حتى قيل فيه: "إنه لم ينسج على منواله.. ولم يأت الزمان بمثاله".
ويكفي الكتاب فخراً.. أن من جاء بعده جعله المورد العذب، والمرجع المعتمد، والمستند الوثيق، كالنواوي في "مجموعه"، والسبكي في "تكملته".. والمطيعي في "تكملة التكملة".

فقد تحلى هذا السفر بالاستيعاب والاستقصاء، وتقييد الأوابد، وتصيد الشوارد. ولا أخالنا أبعدنا النعجة إن جزمنا بأن فيه من آراء أصحاب المذاهب المتبوعة.. ما لم يطلع على بعضه المتأخرون ممن جاء بعده.
ثم إن هذه الموسوعة الفقهية لا تعنى بمذهب الشافعي فحسب.. بل تسلك طريق المقارنة بين المذاهب، والموازنة بين أدلة كل فريق، وعرض التعللات الفقهية.. بعد ذكر الأدلة النقلية، التلويح برجحان القوي من الآراء من حيث الدليل.
