يناقش هذا الكتاب موضوع حجاب المرأة المسلمة من منظور إسلامي جاء بقلم الداعية والأديب المصري المعروف مصطفى لطفي المنفلوطي. وفيه يطرح الكاتب رأيه بعقد مقارنة مبدئية بين المجتمع العربي المسلم والمجتمع الغربي، ويسوق ذلك من خلال (محاورة) بينه وبين صديق آتٍ لتوه من الغرب يعارض فكرة الحجاب ثم ما يلبث أن يغير رأيه عندما يبين له المنفلوطي بأن الحجاب هو مظهر من مظاهر العفة والإيمان والطاعة لله سبحانه وتعالى.
وفي الكتاب يسجل الكاتب رأياً يقول فيه: فما هذا الولع بقصة المرأة، والتمطق بحديثها، والقيام والقعود بأمرها، وأمر حجابها وسفورها، وحريتها وأسرها؟ ويرى أن على من يعارض (الحجاب) أن يقوم بواجبه حيال الأمة أولاً قبل أن يهتم بوضع المرأة وحجابها. وأن المرأة عاشت دهرها هادئة مطمئنة في بيتها، راضية عن نفسها وعن عيشها ترى السعادة في واجب تؤديه لنفسها، أو وقفةٍ تقفها بين يدي ربها، أو عطفةٍ تعطفها على ولدها...".
