صدر عن سلسلة "ترجمان" في المركز العربي للأبحاث ودراسة السياسات كتاب تاريخ موجز للعلمانية، وهو ترجمة مصطفى منادي إدريسي العربية لكتاب غرايم سميث بالإنكليزية A Short History of Secularism.
يمثل هذا الكتاب وجهة نظر بديلة للعلمنة، حيث يجادل بأن الفكر العلماني يعتمد بشدة على الافتراضات المسيحية، إلى درجة لا يمكن معها استيعاب الأخلاق الليبرالية والأخلاق الغربية الحديثة إلا باعتبارها إرثًا مسيحيًا.
ويفند وجهة نظر الباحثين الذين يعلنون انتهاء المسيحية، ويرى أن العلمانية لا تمثل نهاية المسيحية، ولا أنها تدلّ على إلحاد الغرب؛ بل يجب النظر إليها باعتبارها التعبير الأحدث عن الديانة المسيحية، وعلى أنها الأخلاق المسيحية مفصولة عن عقيدتها.
