ينطلق هذا الكتاب من تحقيب أفكار المعتزلة المتأرجحة بين الفلسفة والدين، إلى أربعة أطوار فكرية في أربع حقب زمنية، وقراءة إسهام المنتج الفكري للمعتزلة في كل حقبة، ودورها في الصراع السياسي الإسلامي، هذا الصراع الذي لم ينفصل فيه، السياسي عن الدينيٍّ والفكري والإجتماعي، منذ مقتل عثمان حتى يومنا.
استمرت محاولات المعتزلة تحديداً في تعطيل وتفنيد العقل الشمولي، وتفعيل العقل التجريدي، لتعزيز وحدة الجمهور واستمالته وكسبه كمؤسسة عقلانية بعيدة عن الخرافات والأساطير.
محاولاً إثبات أنَّ الفكر الإعتزالي ظلَّ سجين العلاقة بين المعتزلة والسلطة، يجول جولةً ثم يَضْمَحل بزوال دعم السلطة لهم، وأنَّ المعتزلة لم يبدوا إهتماماً بنشر أفكارهم بين جمهور الناس، أو أنَّ جمهور الناس لم يهتموا بأفكارٍ معقدة لا يُقال فيها إلا بالظن، وهي بعيدة عن دينهم ومَعَاشِهِم، ففشلت محاولاتهم بإستخدام الترغيب والترهيب في تبديل معتقدات الناس.
إنَّ نقداً للعقل الإعتزالي، هو إستشرافٌ للصراع الفكري الحضاري ونقدٌ للعقل العربي الإسلامي في العصرين الأموي والعباسي، وإنَّ نقداً كهذا، سيتطرَّق إلى علاقة النخبة بجمهور النَّاس، وهو بمثابة نقد للعقل العربي الجمعي آنذاك، مع التأكيد على أنَّ العقل النخبوي لبعض مثقفي عصرنا الحديث، لا يختلف كثيراً من ناحية تكرار الأخطاء عليها.
