استقطب عالمُ الغجر الأدباء والفنّانين والمهتمّين بالحقول الإنسانيّة عامّةً، وعُني به وبتفاصيله الرّوائيُّ، والقاصّ، والشّاعر، والمسرحيّ، وعالِم الأنثربولوجيا، والمؤرّخ، ومنظّمات حقوق الإنسان. والتفت إليهم كذلك الإعلاميّون، والمنتجون، وصنّاع الأفلام، ومصمّمو الأزياء. وكان لكلّ مجالٍ من هذه المجالات دوافعه الخاصّة للاهتمام بالغجر. ولمّا كان الغجر عاملاً مشترَكاً في الثّقافة العالميّة، انبثقت فكرة المقارنة بين صورة الغجر في الرّوايتين العربيّة والأجنبيّة، بما يؤهّل إلى تلمّس وجوه الالتقاء أو التّنافر بين الصّورتين مع تبرير هذا وذاك، بعد دراسة المؤشّرات، واستنتاج الرّوابط؛ ممّا يكشف السّتار عن صورة الغجر في الرّواية كياناً إنسانيّاً خاصّاً. ومن هنا تتأتّى أهمية دراسة الباحثة مي بنات في استكشاف مدى مقاربة صورة الغجر بين الرّوايتين من جهةٍ، وتلمُّس مدى ارتباط هذه الصورة بواقع الغجر من جهةٍ أخرى.
