الطب النووي هو اقسام الطب الذي يستخدم المواد الصيدلانية المشعة في الطب من اجل التصوير وتشخيص الامراض وصولا الى العلاج والتى اعتمدت على مبدأ التتبع للنظائر المشعة باستخدام كميات قليلة من تلك لنظائر لغرض دراسة وظيفة الجهاز استخدام الطب النووي المبكر لأمراض العظام ويتم في هذا الفحص حقن المريض بمادة مشعة معلمة بمادة فوسفورية تساعد على تمركزها في الخلايا السطحية للعظام ثم تصوير الجسم بأكمله باستخدام كاميرا جاما المتحركة والتى تصور الهيكل العظمي من الرأس إلى القدم وتبين المناطق المصابة بالسرطان لغرض العلاج لاحقا كذلك يستخدم التصوير النووي حاليا للكشف عن امراض القلب كجفاف عضلات القلب او مشاكل في القلب عبر الأوردة وحساب مقدار النقص في التروية في حال وجود ضيق او انسداد في الشرايين القلبية نتيجة مرض قصور في عمل الشريان التاجي , من أهم تطورت تقنيات التشخيص باستخدام تقنية التصوير الطبقي بالانبعاث الفوتوني الاحادي ( pet/ct ) التي تكون قادرة على إجراء كل من اختبارات التصوير في نفس الوقت ويبين وفي زمن قليل اذا كان الانسان مصاب بالسرطان اولا , كذلك تم تطور استخدم تقنية SPECT ثلاثي الابعاد الناتج عن امتصاص المتتبع المشع داخل المريض , SPECT في أكثر من 90 % من الدراسات.
الجزء الثاني من الكتاب هو العلاج الاشعاعي بنوعية لعلاج الموضعي والعلاج الخارجي او عن بعد اما عن الطريقة الاولى وهى العلاج الموضعى فهي تعتمد على حقن جسم المريض إما بمادة سائلة أو زرع مادة صلبة مشعة حول منطقة الورم من الداخل التي تعمل على تشعيع الخلايا السرطانية وقتلها.
