حظيت مدينة واسط، بقسط واف من عناية المؤرخين والبلدانيين والآثاريين فكتبوا الفصول والنبذ للتعريف بهذه المدينة الإسلامية التي يرقى زمن تأسيسها إلى القرن الأول للهجرة، ولوصف خططها والقرى المحيطة بها، ولذكر حوادثها التاريخية، ولإزاحة الستار عما كشف من آثارها القديمة. ومن بين هذه المراجع، القديم والحديث. ويعد كتاب "تاريخ واسط" لأسلم بن سهل الرزاز الواسطي من أهم الأسفار القديمة التي وضعت لمدينة واسط، بل أنه من اقدم التصانيف الموضوعة في تواريخ المدن الإسلامية، وفيه يعرض المؤلف لنبذة في بناء مدينة واسط، ذاكراً خططها، وشيء من أخبارها. كما ويذكر أسماء من اشتهر من أبنائها في القرنين الثاني والثالث للهجرة، وقد تخلل ذلك إشارات إلى أسماء بعض المواضيع والقرى الواسطية، ولم يكن نهج المؤلف حيث ذكر الأشخاص الواسطيين، أن يورد تراجمهم أو يدون أخبارهم، وإنما اقتصر على ذكر رواة الحديث من أهل واسط، أو ممن طرأ عليها، فأورد في الغالب بعض ما روى كل منهم من أحاديث نبوية.
وهذا ما جعل الكتاب هو أقرب إلى علم الحديث منه إلى علم التاريخ. هذا وقد زيل الكتاب بتحقيق لطيف هدفه توضيح ما أبهم من مصطلحات وتذليل بعض العقبات التي قد تواجه المطلع على فحوى الكتاب.
