إن علم القراءة علم يعلم منه اتفاق الناقلين لكتاب الله تعالى واختلافهم في الحذف والإثبات والتحريك والتسكين والفصل والوصل وغير ذلك من هيئة النطق والإبدال وغيره من حيث السماع. أو يقال: علم بكيفية أداء كلمات القرآن، واختلافها معزواً لناقله، وموضوعه: كلمات القرآن من حيث يبحث فيه عن أحوالها كالمد، والقصر، والنقل واستمراره من السنة والجماعة. وفائدته: صيانته عن التحريف، والتغيير مع ثمرات كثيرة. ولم تزل العلماء تستنبط من كل حرف يقرأ به قارئ معنى لا يوجد في قراءة الآخر، والقراءة حجة الفقهاء في الاستنباط، ومحجتهم في الاهتداء مع ما فيه من التسهيل على الأمة. وغايته: معرفة ما يقرأ به كل من أئمة القراء.
وقد ألف في هذا العلم كثير من الأئمة العلماء، والإمام الشيخ شهاب الدين أحمد بن محمد بن عبد الغني الدمياطي واحد من هؤلاء ويعتبر كتابه "اتحاف فضلاء البشر في القراءات الأربعة عشر من كتب القراءات الهامة بما يحوي من في علم القراءات، وبما يشتمل عليه من فوائد ولطائف حيث جمع بين أقوال العلماء المتقدمين ثم من تأخر بعدهم وحصرها في بوتقة الاتحاف لتكون كتاباً يشع أنواراً علمية جديدة. ولأهمية هذا الكتاب فقد تم الاعتناء به، فجاء محققاً حيث عمد المحقق إلى توضيح، وقدر المستطاع، بعض ما يستشكله القارئ الكريم حول علوم القراءات وعللها، القيام بتخريج الآيات الكريمة والأحاديث الشريفة من مصادرها الأصلية، ضبط الآيات بالشكل الذي أراده المؤلف وقصده على حسب وجه القراءة الذي يستشهد به.
