كان علماء التفسير من هؤلاء الذين عنى بهم فريق من المصنفين عناية خاصة، فدونوا أخبارهم، وأحصوا كتبهم وأثارهم بل لم يفتهم الحديث عن مواليدهم، وتسجيل آرائهم، ونقد هذه الاراء، إذ كان هؤلاء العلماء هم الذين نشطوا لتفسير كتاب الله الكريم.
غير أن تراجم علماء التفسير ظلت مبثوثة فى ثنايا كتب التاريخ والأدب والطبقات المختلفة، لا يجمعها كتاب واحد كمثيلاتها من تراجم الأدباء والنحاة والشعراء، والشافعية والمالكية وغيرهم.
حتى جاء الحافظ جلال الدين السيوطي المتوفي سنة 911هـ. فوضع كتابه "طبقات المفسرين" وكان عزمه أن يكون مؤلفاً حافلا يحدثنا عن المفسرين من الصحابة والتابعين وأتباع التابعين. والمفسرين من المحدثين وأهل السنة. والمفسرين من المعتزلة والشيعة وأحزابهم؛ ولكنه لم يتم.
وفى هذا الكتاب الذى وضعه العلامة المحدث شمس الدين محمد بن على بن أحمد الدودى المصري الشافعي قد أكملت التحقيق بما رجعت إليه من كثير من الكتب التى نقل عنها الداودى. والتى كان يشير إليها فى نهاية الكثير من التراجم.
ومما يجدر ذكره أن التراجم فى "طبقات المفسرين" للداودى منقولة بالنص عن الكتب التى استعان بها. وقد كان لمقابلة هذه التراجم من نقص، وملء ما فيها من بياض. ولذلك كانت هذه الكتب الكثيرة بمثابة نسخ أخرى للكتاب.
