مثّلت الأحداث السياسية التي شهدتها الدولة الإسلامية في القرن الأول للهجرة، نقطة تحوّل لظهور قوى معارضة للسلطة الحاكمة، إذ تحوّلت بمواقفها ومنطلقاتها السياسية إلى تيارات سياسية وعقائدية، تشكّلت وتبلورت من خلال الممارسات السياسية التي اتبعتها الدولة الأموية ضدها، ووفق تفاعلها مع الواقع السياسي المحيط بها.
الإباضية هي إحدى الفرق التي انبثقت من الخوارج المُحكِّمة وانتهجت نهجاً اختلفت فيه عن الفرق الأخرى المعارضة للسلطة، وتقاطعت معها في جوانب أخرى؛ إذ تشكّلت خلال المرحلة التأسيسية ملامح مبادئها وشعاراتها السياسية، ثم تبلورت من خلال الممارسة السياسية الأطر الدينية والسياسية لفكرها، وفق المحيط الجغرافي والظروف التي خرجت منها، من البصرة إلى اليمن وعُمان وشمال أفريقيا. وقد مثّل الفكر الإباضي منعطفاً للتجربة السياسية التي خاضها العُمانيون، ولا سيّما بعد أن اتّضحت ملامحه، وطُبقت أفكاره عملياً في نهاية النصف الأول من القرن الثاني للهجرة بإعلان ولادة الإمامة الأولى في عُمان.
يسعى هذا الكتاب للكشف عن الظروف والأوضاع التي ساهمت في تحوّل الإباضية من مجرد موقف سياسي تجاه الأحداث التي عصفت بالأمة الإسلامية في القرن الأول للهجرة إلى تيار سياسي له نظريته السياسية في الحكم، وهو نجح في تطبيقها في بقاع مُختلفة من العالم الإسلامي؛ وهي نظرية نشأت من منطلقات سياسية معارضة لممارسات الدولة الأموية، ثم تكوّنت وتبلورت نتيجة علاقات وظروف معقدة في محيطها الجغرافي والاجتماعي والسياسي الذي تفاعل مع ثوابتها، وأثّر في ممارستها واتجاهاتها ومتغيرات قواها.
