لقد أصبح الإطلاع على المصاحف المخطوطة اليوم، لا سيما القديمة منها، أمراً متاحاً للدارسين، بعد أن كان ذلك قبل سنوات من الأمور الصعبة، إن لم يكن من الأمور المستحيلة، وذلك بفضل الوسائل الإلكترونية الحديثة التي مكنت المتخصصين من أخذ صور دقيقة للمصاحف وعَرْضِهَا من خلال الشبكة الدولية للمعلومات، أو طباعة نسخ منها تطابق الأصل المأخوذة منه، وأعطى ذلك فرصة للقراءة في تلك المصاحف ودراسة رسمها وأشكال خطوطها وعلاماتها، وما فيها من رموز لأعداد الآيات والأجزاء وأسماء السور وفواتحها، وغير ذلك من العلامات أو المعلومات.
وجاء هذا الكتاب في قسمين، الأول: الدراسة، وتتضمن تعريفاً بالمصاحف المذكورة، ودراسة ما فيها من ظواهر، والثاني: المعجم، ويضم قوائم بالرسوم التي تميزت بها تلك المصاحف، وجاءت الدراسة في مبحثين: الأول: في وصف المصاحف التي أُخِذَتْ منها الرسوم التي يتضمنها هذا الكتاب، وهي مصحف طشقند، ومصحف جامع عمرو بن العاص، وأوراق من مصاحف صنعاء، ومصحف دار الكتب المصرية المنقوط بطريقة أبي الأسود الدؤلي.
أما الثاني: في دراسة الرسوم التي تضمنتها تلك المصاحف، وما فيها من أهجية تخالف رسم مصحف المدينة ومصحف القاهرة، وقد يجد الدارس وما يعضدها في بعض كتب رسم المصحف، وقد لا يجد ذلك، ولكنها لتواترها في تلك المصاحف تشكل ظواهر تستحق الدراسة والتأمل وإنتظار ما تكشف عنه دراسة النقوش والخطوط العربية القديمة قبل إطلاق أحكام نهائية بصددها.
أما القسم الثاني فجاء في أربعة أجزاء، كل جزء يضم قائمة برسوم أحد تلك المصاحف المذكورة؛ وهذا المبحث الخاص بالدراسة يركز على الظواهر المشتركة في المصاحف الأربع مما خالقت فيه المصاحف المطبوعة في زماننا، خاصة مصحفي القاهرة والمدينة المنورة، أو وافقت رواية غير مشهورة ذكرتها كتب الرسم، مما لم يؤخذ به في المصاحف المطبوعة.
