اختلف المسلمون في كيفية التعامل مع القرآن الكريم وفهمه، فذهب قوم إلى وجوب الأخذ بظاهر القرآن الكريم فقط ولا يجوز تأويله وهم أهل الظاهر، بينما ذهبت الباطنية إلى وجوب حصر معارف القرآن الكريم في الباطن فقط، ولكنّ جمهور المسلمين يرون بأن القرآن الكريم مشتمل على الظاهر والباطن، فكما يجب الإهتمام بظاهر القرآن الكريم يجب الإهتمام بالباطن، وإن الوصول إلى الظاهر يكون من خلال التفسير، بينما الولوج إلى الباطن يكون من خلال التأويل.
وقد وجدت عدّة نظريات في بيان المراد من تأويل النص القرآني، وهذه الرسالة تحاول أن تسلط الضوء على منهجين لشخصيتين في عملية تأويل النص القرآني، المنهجية الأولى للشيخ محمّد هادي معرفة رجل دين ينتمي إلى الحوزة العلمية، والمنهجية الثانية في التأويل للدكتور نصر حامد أبو زيد وهو شخصية أكاديمية ينتمي إلى تيار الحداثة.
