في البداية، إن موضوع ذم الإشتغال بالكلام ليس جديدًا على مسامع أهل العلم، بل يمتد جذوره إلى عصر الأئمة السلف، الذين عاصروا نشأة الفكر الكلامي وظهروه، في أوائل القرن الثاني الهجري. وقد صدر عن كبار السلف، من أهل الفقه والحديث والتصوف، أمثال أبي حنيفة والشافعي وابن حنبل والجنيد رضي الله عنهم، كلام كثير في ذم الكلام وأهله، تناقله أصاحبهم، ولا يزال يتناقله النسا، كل لتبرير موقفه وتصحيح مذهبه، وأبرز الذامين له هو عالم قريش ملأ طباق الأرض علمًا الإمام المطلبي محمد بن إدريس الشافعي رضي الله عنهم، وهو الذي ركز على تحليل كلامه الكبير فى هذا البحث.
أما بالنسبة لصدور هذا الذم منه، ومن غيره من الأئمة فلا سبيل لتكذيبه، لأنه قد ثبت في الروايات الصحيحة عنهم، ثبوتًا لا يقبل النقاش. وكل الذي يمكن في خضم هذه الحكايات هو أن نقرأ هذه الحكايات والأقوال، قراءة متكاملة، بحيث نفهمها فهمًا جيدًا، في ضوء القواعد الأصولية والحقائق التاريخية، بدل أن ننطلق من موقف فكري، تبنيناه مسبقًا، على وجه العشوائية وحينما نعالج هذا الموضوع بهذه الطريقة المقبولة نتوصل إلى النتيجة المرجوة، والصواب الذي لا محيد عنه.
فعلينا إذًا أن نعرف معرفة صحيحة ما هو المراد بعلم الكلام، وكيف كانت نشأته الأولى وكيف تطور، وما طبيعته، وما إلى ذلك من الأمور. كما يجب أن نفهم أيضًا موقف السلف الصالح من الأمور المستحدثة بصفة عامة، ونظرهم إلى الشبهات ومواطن الريبة بصفة خاصة.
