يبدأ كتابنا بمقدِّمة تاريخيَّة عن نشأة علم مصطلح الحديث، بدءًا بمقدِّمة صحيح مسلم وإشارات الإمام مالك إلى أن يصلَ إلى كتاب ابن الصَّلاح ويَسِمَه بكونه الأبَ الثّانيَ لهذا العلم، فيتحدَّثُ بعدها عن مقدِّمته المشهورة واختصاراتها وُصولًا إلى كتابنا الذي يُشكِّل مدار هذا المقال فيستثنيَه ليتكلم عمّن نظم المقدِّمةَ، وشرح هذه المنظوماتِ، وعمّن شرح المقدِّمة نفسَها ليعود إلى الإمام النوويِّ ويُذكِّر أنَّه اختصر المقدمة في كتاب «الإرشاد»، ثم اختصرها في كتاب «التقريب» ليتحدَّث عن أهمية هذا الكتاب وما لقيَه من اهتمامٍ بين العلماء، ولمَ على طالب العلم درسَه وجعله ديدنهم. مقدِّمة تحقيقيَّةٌ كهذه لكتابٍ يتَّسم بكونه الدَّرجةَ الأولى في سُلَّم طالبِ العلم للتَّرقِّي في علم مصطلح الحديث تجعلُ من نفسها حريَّةً بالتَّدريس في المعاهد الشَّرعيَّة، لا أن تعتبر مجرَّدَ كتاب مرجعيٍّ في هذا الفن، فهي وإن كانت من آخر الطَّبَعات صدورًا إلّا أنَّها أوَّلًا في فهم مبتغى الإمام النوويِّ في اختصار اختصاره بأن أراده متنًا فدعَّمت هذا المتن لتكمله لا لتوسِّعه إذ للكتاب شروحٌ كثيرة تفي بالغرض الأخير، لكنَّه يحتاج زيادة ليغدو متنًا كاملًا تاريخيًّا وعلميًّا.
