ولا يسع قارئ تحفة الغريب بعد التأمل في آراء صاحبه إلا أن يعجب بهذا الكتاب الذي يستعرض فيه صاحبه آراء العلماء على إختلاف مذاهبهم ونزعاتهم وعصورهم لا يتحيز لهذا المذهب أو ذاك ولا يجامل عالماً من العلماء أياً كان مستواه العلمي إذا بدا له أنه لم يوفق في رأيه، وهو يستحسن ما يراه أهلاً للإستحسان، وينتقد ما يراه خليقاً بالإنتقاد، وربما كانت جرأته في رد آراء بعض العلماء، وخاصة المشهورين منهم، سبباً في إتهامه بالتحامل على ابن هشام وابن مالك.
