لم يبلغ أي من شعراء إسبانيا المعاصرين ما بلغه لورکا من شهرةٍ عالمية. فقد جعلت منه ترجمات أعماله في السنين التي سبقت الحرب العالمية الثانية رجلاً ذائع الصيت، وخاصةً في بريطانيا والأمريكيتين ولعل الفضل في شهرته المبكرة يعود، بشكلٍ ما، لظروف مصرعه الفاجع المروع في الحرب الأهلية الإسبانية. غير أن السنين اللاحقة أثبتت أن القدر الأكبر من شعبيته يستند إلى أسسٍ أكثر رسوخاً من الحساسية والتعاطف. والحق أن قيمة لورکا قد علت على تعاقب السنين وبإمكاننا القول واثقين أن شعره يقف في مرتبة متقدمة ضمن خير ما قدمته إسبانيا. وهذه المختارات (ومقالته عن «الروح المبدع»، الواردة في نهاية هذا الكتاب) تمثّل أهم مزايا لوركا الشعرية.
ولد فيديريكو غارثيا لوركا في فوينتا فاکيروس في سهل غرناطة في الخامس من حزيران عام 1898، وقتل في تموز عام 1936 بید عصبة مجهولة في الأيام الأولى من الحرب الأهلية، وقد جرى إعدامه كما يظن في فيثنار على التلال القريبة من غرناطة، ولكن جسده (كما كان قد تنبأ) لم يعثر عليه:
عرفت أنني قتیل:
فتَّشوا المقاهي، والمقابر، والكنائس،
فتحوا البراميل والخزائن،
سرقوا ثلاثة هياكل عظمية لينتزعوا أسنانها الذهبية،
ولم يعثروا عليّ!
ألم يعثروا عليّ؟
نعم لم يعثروا عليّ!
