لم ينل أي شاعر إسباني من الشهرة العالمية، ما ناله لوركا، إذ قدمت حتى في السنوات التي سبقت الحرب الثانية، ترجمات لأعماله في بريطانيا والأميركيتين، وربما كان بعض شهرته خارج إسبانيا، عائداً إلى ظروف موته المأساوية العنيفة في الحرب الأهلية الإسبانية، لكن الأعوام اللاحقة أثبتت أن القدر الأعظم من شعبيته مستند إلى أسس أشد رسوخاً مع العاطفية المحض؛ والحق إن لوركا وضح في المنظور، شيئاً فشيئاً، مع مرّ الزمن، حتى ليمكن أن يقال الآن قول الواثق المطمئن إن شعره لهو من خير ما أبدعته إسبانيا.
وهذا نص تقتبسه من قصيدة "رغبة"... قلبك الدافئ لا شيء سواه... جنّتي حقلٌ... ولا بلبلَ... لا قيثار فيه... جنّتي حقل به نهر خفيٌّ... وبه نبع صغير... جنتي حقل بلا مهماز ريح تعتلي الأغصان... لا نجمة تهوى أن تكون الورقة... ضوءٌ درّيّ... يتألق، يدفأ بالضوء الآخر... في حقل من نظرات منكسرة... وفي الهدوء... حيث القبلات...
