تحلى الإمام جلال الدين السيوطي بكريم الأخلاق، وجميل الصفات، وعظيم الشمائل، فقد كان عالماً، عاملاً بما وهبه الله من أنواع العلوم والفنون، توّج ذلك كله بتقوى الله تعالى، والخوف منه، وحب سنة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، والعمل على تطبيقها، وكراهية البدع والبعد عن أصحابها، وصف العلماء الإمام السيوطي بالجرأة في الفتوى وبالمعرفة العلمية وذلك أطلقوا عليه صفة "المعقلية الموسوعية"، وهذه المعرفة هي التي ساعدته على أن يصبح مضرباً للمثل في كثرة التصنيف.
وهذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا هو أحد مبتكراته التي لم يُسبق إلى مثلها، فهو من أجل كتبه وأكثرها استيعاباً للنحو، وقد بناه على سبعة فنون (أو أقسام) جعل لكل فن عنواناً خاصاً، وخطبة لأن كلاً منها يصلح لأن يكون مؤلفاً مستقلاً. وقد أتت على الشكل التالية: 1-فن القواعد والأصول وقد رتبه على حروف المعجم 2-فن الضوابط والاستثناءات والتقسيمات 3-فن بناء المسائل بعضها على بعض 4-فن الجمع والفرق 5-فن الألغاز والأحاجي 6-فن المناظرات والمجالسات والفتاوي والمراسلات 7-فن الأفراد من الغرائب.
الأشباه والنظائر الفقهية علم اهتم العلماء به فأفردوه بالتصنيف . وقد سبق ابن نجيم الحنفي فيه غير واحد، كان أكثرهم فضلا على كتاب ابن نجيم السيوطي الشافعي جمع فيه ابن نجيم سبعة فنون : 1ـ القواعد، وفيها : أـ القواعد الفقهية التي تجمع تحتها الفروع الكثيرة . ب ـ القواعد الكلية التي يتخرج عليها ما لا ينحصر من الصور الجزئية ـ 2 ـ الفوائد ، 3 ـ الجمع والفرق من الأشباه والنظائر، 4 ـ الألغاز الفقهية، 5 ـ الأشباه والنظائر، 6 ـ الحيل، 7 ـ الحكايات فهو كتاب يقوي الملكة الفقهية عند القارىء، ويوسع ذهن الباحث ليميز بين المسائل التي يظن تشابهها.
